A few tips if your unit is not functioning properly:

  1. Check if your filters are clean. Change if necessary.
  2. Check your circuit breakers both at the unit and inside your home.
  3. If you have a heat pump and the "emergency heat" light stays on, turn your thermostat switch to Emergency Heat only position. This will prevent your outdoor unit from running.
  4. In severe cold weather, your heat pump unit may freeze over time. It should have a defrost device to thaw the unit. The unit makes a "whoosh" noise and melting ice may produce visible light steam.
  5. Clogged filters can cause your unit to freeze. Turn off your unit and change the filter. Switch the thermostat to "Fan Only" until the ice is melted.
  6. If problems persist, call The General for a service check up.

A few tips for energy efficiency:

  1. Replace filters every 30 days.
  2. Do not block air return grilles in your home.
  3. Keep doors and windows closed while running the unit.
  4. Weather-strip doors and windows.
  5. Insulate your attic, walls, and floor.
  6. Keep windows facing the sun covered with drapes or mini-blinds.
  7. Keep the thermostat set at one comfortable temperature. Adjust at night if needed.
  8. When adjusting the thermostat, move the set point in small intervals.
  9. Keep outdoor units free from shrubs, plants, bushes, or grass grown over the coil fins.
